Saddleback Caterpillar


Saddleback Caterpillar Brown with a green back and flanks, on which there is a conspicuous brown oval central area that usually is bordered with white. primary nettling hairs are borne on the back of paired fleshy protuberances toward the front and hind ends of the body. There is also a row of smaller stinging organs on each side.

Saddleback caterpillars are part of a group of caterpillars called slug caterpillars. These caterpillars are short and stocky, moving over plants much like a slug, their head and legs hidden from view. Some species in this group, like the Saddleback caterpillar, have tufts of short, stinging bristles. These bristles serve as protection from predators. The bristles are even incorporated into their cocoons, to protect the pupa as it turns into a moth.


Life Cycle Saddleback Caterpillar eggs reveal the small larvae. which are observed curled inside with anterior and posterior ends touching. After ten days, the minute larva will chew itself free from the egg, creating a small exit hole. Larvae need approximately four to five months to feed and develop before pupating

Second through penultimate instars acquire brown colorations on the anterior and posterior ends, and develop the bright green saddle markings on the midsection. Although still small at 5–8 mm (0.2–0.3 in) in length, they acquire urticating spines on the fleshy tubercles of the body as early as the second instar..
