Exterminating Fleas

Exterminating Fleas

Fleas are also known as Siphonaptera. They are wingless insects with mouthparts that are used for piercing the skin and sucking the blood of its prey. Fleas live off the blood of mammals, including birds.

There are different types of fleas such as;

Cat flea are the most common type of fleas. Even though it’s called a cat flea it may be found on dogs as well. Human may be bitten by cat fleas but they will not be infested by them. A couple of fleas on adult dogs or cats will cause very little harm unless the host becomes allergic to the substances in their saliva. The disease that results is called flea allergy dermatitis. Small animals that have large infestations may lose enough bodily fluid to fleas feeding that may result in dehydration. Fleas are also responsible for transmission of disease through humans. If the fleas have been feeding on the host’s blood, they will have a reddish-brown color when it’s squashed. Cat fleas can transmit other parasites and infections to dogs and cats and also to humans. Diseases can be transmitted by fleas also.

Flea Bites

Dog fleas prefer to live on dogs and also on cats, but can be found on humans as well as other available animals. Pet owners may not be troubled by fleas until their pet is away for a long period of time, and the fleas must find another place to go. Only then will they begin to bite humans. Flea bites commonly take place around the waist, ankles, armpits, and in the bend of the elbows and knees. Symptoms may include hives, itching from the rashes. The rashes usually have small bumps that itch and may bleed. The amount of the skin that is affected may spread overtime. Symptoms of a dog flea bite will most likely occur right away or within a few hours.

Flea Bites on Human

Human flea will most often bite people on the legs and ankles, and usually there are about 2 or 3 bites in a row. But depending on the size of the infestation they may even reach above your head. Flea bites are felt immediately, but tend to become increasingly irritating, and are frequently sore for as much as a week. Flea bites may vary in their effects, from a temporary itch to prolonged symptoms that last for years, depending on the victim and their sensitivity. Kids 10 years old and under were found to be a lot more sensitive to flea bites than older people.

The fleas will inject you with hemorrhagic saliva that can cause severe itching, and repeated bites may create a generalized rash. Usually a small, red spot appears where the flea has penetrated the skin. The spot is surrounded by a red halo, but there usually isn’t much swelling. For temporary relief from the itching you can apply cooling preparations, such as; carbolated Vaseline, menthol, camphor, or calamine lotion, or by placing a piece of ice on the affected area. For some who suffer severe allergic reactions, antigens are accessible that are sufficiently effective to cause the immunized person to be subsequently unaware of their flea bites.

Moorhen flea found in bird nests, and is more likely to be found on the bird's body. The Moorhen flea is a large flea, easily identified because the male has two heavy horn-like spines on one of the genital flaps, and the female has a deep "bite" on the seventh sternite.

Oriental rat flea are usually found in clothing, bedding or near areas where host animals sleep or in the fur of the host animal. Fleas spread through homes, buildings and yards.

Many times fleas are not visible to the naked eye. So, whether or not you actually see fleas on your pet, they may still be there. Scratching, scabs and dark specs, or "flea dirt," found on the skin can all be signs that your pet has become the unwitting host for a family of fleas. Fleas can carry tapeworms, too. If you notice small white rice-like things in your pet’s feces or in the hair around his anus, your pet probably has tapeworms, which means he may also have fleas. In extreme cases, an animal may be lethargic and its lips and gums pale.

Mutant NYC Bed Bugs Impervious to Toxic Attack

A new report in the Journal of Medical Entomology has confirmed our worst fears: Big Apple bed bugs have developed nerve cell mutations that make them almost impervious to pyrethroid toxins, such as deltamethrin, commonly used against them. Toxicologists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Korea's Seoul National Universityhave conducted extensive tests on the resilient bastards, and it appears that New York City bed bugs are now as much as264 times more resistant to deltamethrin than easier to kill bugs in Florida. Of course, Florida is where bed bugs retire to suck blood in their old age, so it figures they'd have a higher mortality rate there. But up here, they've totally gone rogue, and the Times editorial board is calling for "a task force to figure out how to stay ahead of an army that seems to be growing every year."
